Time to speak up. Cannot live without views and opinions, being neutral does not mean disinterested, but means being passive and uninterested. Last thing we can have towards our society is Apathy.

Is it Hopeless? - Part 2

If someone criticizes our country we instantly call him an anti national. And this is getting more common now a days. Once we tasted some success with the economy we are more intolerant than what we were. There is a thin line between confidence and arrogance. Are we not becoming what we complained about the west always? We call the west aggressive, arrogant and over bearing. But are we not starting to mimic the west on this aspect too?

Yes we are growing. We are economically stronger than before. And we have the potential to grow further and for atleast another decade atleast at the current rate. More we are integrated with the world, more the opportunities to explore. But we are also not immune from any global issue anymore. Dollar was at Rs.40 this time last year its Rs. 45 this year. Oil was 90$/barrel this time last year it peaked to 140+ and back to 100$ now. Our inflation was much lesser than the current 12% . And energy is the key for our growth. And how secure is this resource? We need the whole world to help us out with this. Uranium and Nuclear technology is the only recipe for the enormous appetite. So we have the potential to grow but we need the whole world to help us with that.

Why are we dependent on the world for energy? We know we did not have the oil resources. So what was our strategy to develop alternative energy sources? How much was invested in this area and what was achieved? Our nuclear research and capability is shrouded in mystery. Are we hiding something here? But now we know our reactors are running out of fuel and many are running under the maximum capacity. Did our nuclear engineers fail us? Why are we at a point now when the ability to test another atomic weapon is tied to the supply? Is our govt. coming clean on the details of this deal? Or do we know if the whole world will honor the deal if we deviate from what they expect of us? We are still not out of the woods with and without the deal.

And on the other side the World needs us. They need our market. And our labor force. Like China has made manufacturing cheaper, we have made services cheaper. And we are a huge market for international energy companies. Now it is more a two way street than what it was before. But still, how much do we contribute and how much do we take? I am sure we do not hold the upper hand. Are we even atleast? No country is completely independent. But how critical is their dependency determines the strength.

Japan imports food. We are self reliant on this aspect. But good are we with water? All our major rivers flow across international boundaries at places. China can cut Brahmaputra out and divert water into its mainland. Nepal and China can cut water flowing into India. So what is out strategy to manage relations with these smaller nations around us and who hold the key to our survival?

<!--

Is it Hopeless?

We are one of the fastest growing economy in the world. The fastest growing Democracy. Atlast, we shed the Hindu rate of growth of the 80s. Predictions galore. India is the next super power. And already a mini superpower. And more stuff like that. How hopeful are we to achieve this status? How realistic is that hope? Is it like God will show up one day as a knight on a horse back? Or like Sachin Saurav and Rahul can win us a world cup? Even if we grow economically what is the quality of life we are expecting? What about the environmental degradation? And associated health concerns? Are we going to spend the new wealth on water and medicines? Can we ever match the western quality of life even with the new found wealth? Where do we stand today ?

The most basic and fundamental of all requirements, tolerance. How tolerant are we? We are quick to jump on people if we are called racists? Remember Symonds - Bhaji? Are we really racists? We are not. Racism is more diverse and encompassing than what we are? We are casteists, lingustic bigots, regionalists, religious fanatics and least of all, if ever remembered, nationalists. Who can dare to call us racists? It will be years before we get there. So when are we going to heal?

Nation first mentality. We have a bottom up mentality and we never reach the top. Except in rarest of rare cases. Indo US Nuke deal is one example. But to get there Cong let regional satraps run away with so many things. Regional aspirations overtake national interests. And almost all states bordering the international boundaries (or LoC / LAC ... whatever it is called) have problems integrating with the mainstream. North East is like a separate country. Kashmir is still boiling. Naxals are entering newer territories and have a new found vigor since the communists took power in Nepal. 60 years since Independence and we are yet to secure our boundaries. How long can we fool students with wrong maps? How much of the actual published maps are under Indian control? How much are under atleast the Military control? How much of it has civilian leadership?

Accountability. Something our politicians and babus never heard about. What are they accountable for? How long do they spend time in the Parliament? How many times do they sleep during the sessions? Do they perform any duty commiserate with the pay (Approx 16000 per month)? How much time a common man being paid that money spends at work as against these MPs? When they cannot even attend the sessions and ask the right questions and get things done, how dumb are we to vote them back to power time and again? On the other side, how many of us vote? No excuses. Name not in the voter list, recently moved, out of town, hot outside, sick.... Think about the Cinema ticket lines we stood in, time wasted watching cricket matches during work days, time spent on Diwali shopping, and ofcourse in Tirupathi queue. Did we ever complain then?

Corruption. I don agree Western democracies are perfect. They all have issues. But with a difference. We need not bribe someone to perform his duty. Bribe is to make someone do something to bypass laws. In India, to get a the govt servant perform his duty he needs to bribed. What does it take to clean this? Education? Integrity? Higher salary? Discipline? We are always ready to jump with on politicians about black money. Given today's real estate prices, how many of us own black money? Are we not corrupt? Are we not greedy? Its just that we did not get our hands on such money before and when we did, we proved we are no different than our favourite corrupt politician.

To be counted and respected we need to show more discipline in everyday life. The way we ride on the roads, dispose garbage, personal hygiene. No road is wide enough the way we drive. Any number of garbage disposal dumpsters will not solve the problem if we are not ready to walk to it and drop the bag off. No clean wall will be seen till we stop spitting and peeing as we wish. So we need to behave when we travel and at home.

We should stop claiming things and instead make the world notice us. Imitation is the best form flattery. So stop mimicing the west and make them mimic us. Don't stop with Yoga.

To be continued...

<!--

The attack on Dresden and airlifting of food into Berlin when the Soviets blocked the allied sectors of Germany are some prime examples of the ability of the US to use its airpower in an unprecedented manner. Ability to move into any enemy territory with enormous power anywhere in the world is their forte. There is no place in the world they cannot reach, on the land, in the air and under the oceans. But all this proved wrong. New Orleans was unreacheable for 5 days. No enemy fire whatsoever. It is not situated in some remote corner in the world but right in the US. When they could have airdropped food 24x7 and lit the sky up for days, they let people die of hunger and starvation in the street where they convened for relief. Its a Shame. When you had no scarcity of food, transport or money, its an ultimate Shame that can rest the discussion of America being regarded as Super Power anymore. Please feed your people first and they you can attack someone else.

<!--

But I call them by one name, National Failures. Why so? Do we all know or sing our National Anthem? Or do we all know why not Vande Mataram our National Anthem? Not everyone wants to sing our National Song. We poached our National Animal to extinction. And no one cares about the National Bird either. We don't have a National leader but may be an international person acting as one. And why Hindi is our National language when not many can understand that? And why was it chosen in the first place? We may soon need to say Former National Animal and present National animal. We can instead call this a list of what we wanted to do and never did. Shame on us.

Why did we choose a British style Democracy when US was the most successful Democracy then? Why did we choose a weaker system? How can 543 jokers run a country where PM is a puppet of those jokers?

How come Hindi was chosen as the National language when Gujarath, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra and West Bengal and entire North east does not speak Hindi? UP, MP, Rajasthan, Bihar are the only big states which speak Hindi. Was it just for a vote bank or to show the dominance of hindi speaking people in the govt? So there goes our failure in choosing the right one.

Do we all know the history of the country? I don know who ruled in Bengal or Gujarath for that matter? But we were all made to believe Mughals were the only rulers in the country. No one knows who built temple at Konark, but we are all taught who built the Taj. And we bicker about the Taj in every possible way. Who owns it, who pollutes it and what not?

We can add more such to the list of national failures. But no one can beat us in naming something as our national treasure and not treating it as one.

<!--

He is worth some 44billion$. I will firmly believe he will top the list of philantropists too. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the world richest foundation carrying out work of immense priority all over the world. And most of the money for this foundation comes from Bill Gates himself. This is a commendable job, though I don't approve of all his business tactics though. As a person he is doing his part in a major way to improve the quality of life of people in all possible ways from health to education. I don't exactly know how many billionaires do this kind of charity. In general Americans do throw money for charity work in a big way. Its a fact. So do the European countries and most importantly the scandinavian countries who honour their committed percentage of GDP for global human causes. And the list of rich countries do not stop right here. We have our oil rich countries in the Gulf. I belive they haven't heard the word "charity" in their lives. May be they are not taught about it in the world class Madarasas. How can you sit on an ever growing pile of cash of billions of dollars and not ever think of improving the quality of human life, atleast in the muslim world? Saudi Arabia was the major underwriter of the 7billion$ Yom Kippur war of 1973. The same kindgom funded the Mujahideens in Afghanistan, madarasas all over the world for that matter get the petro dollars in one form or the other. What do these islamic schools teach? Hatred. Hatred for anything and everything they don't believe in. Everyone has hatred or atleast intolerance in a lighter sense, towards so many things. What do they hate, rather than listing what they hate, in the simplest way, hatred to what the entire world believes as humanity, generosity, kindness, benevolence, compassion, magnanimity, mercy, goodwill and what not. Say anything good, they hate it. Where in the whole world do you have schools to teach hatred?

Humanitarian response to the 2004 Tsunami is as follows, the link.
Look for, or basically do a microscopic search for the Arab countries to find about their generosity. And more importantly what else do these people have to offer the whole world interms of expertise. When a calamity strikes they neither donate money they have nor they have any expertise to offer. Sorry to say they lack expertise, they can fund wars, terrorists and spread hatred. They can share their expertise in slaughtering the basic human rights. When the entire world believed the way Indonesians are helped during Tsunami would dispell partially the hatred of Islamic towards non muslims, the Arab world never reciprocated. They missed their opportunity, I suspect if they ever saw one in that or the need.

Have they ever helped anyone on the humanitarian grounds? They need to realise what humanity is by the way for that to happen. I don't see that happening, do you?

<!--

Already the projections are available for 2025, when India will be behind US and China to become the third largest economy dwarfing Europe. Elections are being fought on economic agendas too. All this is because of one man who chose to take the road less taken. The man who was the invisible hand behind the change. The shrewd brain that gave India the direction when the world became Unipolar and the cold war ended. There was no USSR to back India, no money in the coffers, Kashmir and Punjab were burning. We as a nation, were about to fail. Mr PV Narasimha Rao changed all this. He gave the nation a new lease of life and set the path for a deserving place in the new world order. And he passed away last week. Congress did not even let his body inside their office. It was laid infront of the office, outside the gate. And there was a behind the scene tussle regarding cremating him in New Delhi, the grave yard leased to Gandhi family. His body was flown to Hyderabad and cremated there. The story does not end here. What I say now is a reproduction of a first hand narration from my friend in Hyderabad. He reached the cremation site at 9 pm, way after it started(2 PM). Our former PMs body lies there half burnt with no wood. No police nor family to see to it. Did he deserve this? Would we even let a dog die this death for that matter?

Has this nation has lost its conscience? He deserves a place that is far better than a memorial in New Delhi. Our generation will thank him for giving us all this whole new dimension of opportunities. We must remember him and cherish whatever he did for the nation and its destiny.

<!--

The famous Marina beach is now nothing but decaying ruins. And the death count still mounting. When the entire world was stunned at what happened in the Indian ocean rim countries, some bastards in Chennai are more concerned about something else. Buses were stoned, trains stopped, shops shutdown. All for a rumour regarding the death of M Karunanidhi. When the entire nation is saddened by the harrowing Tsunami and the resulting loss of lives, where from these morons think of something like this. And what if he is dead? There are people who got smacked against walls like a mosquito and died with head split open. Communities lost as a whole with no trace of them. One entire airbase in CarNicobar was off the maps for more than a day. And to top all this, most deaths that happened in Chennai come from harbour area, the constituency of Karunanidhi. When will these politicians change? Leadership comes out during times like these. Leading a mob that stones a bus is no skill at all. But leading by example when completely taken by surprise and stand amid ruins is what we expect from Ministers. But I understand it is too much to expect from these stone throwing assholes to deliver. This is no time for partisan views. Should we mourn the deaths or the incompetence of the Govt machinery (Read Politicians) to deliver time and again? Its yet another example to explemplify the incompetence, inability, ineptitude of our representatives. Time for everyone to start thinking interms of electing sensible people to lead us in time of crisis like that rather than voting for Dhoti clad stone throwing mobsters.

When I visit home next time, I know I will see a completely different coastline, ruins of the tsunami attack, visible scars on the lives of many, but not a revamped govt machinery or politicians. One more tsunami I wish will attack the St.George Fort when the Assembly is in full strength and take all those impotents away forever and save the nation. May God turn this Wish True.

<!--

To be frank we do not have a clear stand on the issue. Or atleast the govt has one but they do not enunciate to the public. Irrrespective of what Pakistan claims, the world knows it is a state sponsored terrorism. Some express this and others do not. And the pro-India people of Kashmir believe the terrorism is the handwork of Pakistanis. And it looks like India needs to get this one solved to an extent before we get a place in the new expanded security council. With four of the Big 5 expressing their support for India's place in the new council, the US is not vocal about its position and it looks like they are pushing India for something before they make their stand known to the world. And what they are pushing for can be nothing but Kashmir. India needs to mend it fences with its neighbours. Solve the problems amicably and then make a legitimate claim for its place in the new council. But is this possible given the kind of neighbours we have? We have neigbours with Terrorism and support to anti-India elements as their state policy. Are we being victimised here to go soft or deal with illogical nations for a place we deserve in the new council.

But if we look back to 80s we can see a different India altogether. The central govenment under late Indira Gandhi and the TN state govt under MGR sponsored LTTE. They financed the group from its inception. RAW trained the militants. The pro-tamil supporters and sympathisers visited these guerillas many a times during the conflict. Anyone who oppsed this intervention is a political pariah then and now in TN. The LTTE were treated in hospitals of TN. The nation of Srilanka was burning. Suicide attacks everywhere. Thousands killed. A tiny nation like Ceylon cannot take all this. And who sponsored this??? India. Was this not a state policy then? Yes I accept that Tamils were subjected to some second class treatement by the Sinhalese majority. There was a problem in hand. We excacerbated this altogether. I remember people with kids begging in the streets of chennai. Kids were crying for food everywhere. It was a pathetic situation then. All this happened just because the armed conflict started. India basically destroyed that tiny nation with its irresponsible behaviour. And the result, a time bomb set on by Indira blasted on the face of her own son a decade later.

If we claim we are victims of state sponsored terrorism, we should also accept we were villains too.

<!--

First time in the history such a movement was ever launched. No one would have ever imagined such an idea and its feasability. With inital experiments in South Africa, non-violence was mastered in India. Gandhi with the same influence he had over the people of the country, had he started a violent movement instead, I believe we could have still driven the British out or may be not? We can always debate the possible outcomes of such events. Why did the masses favour Ahimsa? Whether it was a Non-violent demonstration or a violent attack, the British responded with the same bullets and batons. No one received any special treatement. One set of people were unarmed when they faced the British and others were armed. And still the most popular by all means was the non-violent movement.

If we tweak the history a little bit and see what if had the rulers been someone else other than British. Say Japs or Germans. Then Gandhi would have chosen the gun instead. Or there will be no Gandhi at all to talk about. Japs or Germans might have killed him or imprisoned him the day he raised his voice against them. The situation might have looked like this - No newspapers, public meetings or demonstrations, shoot at sight orders all day, all night. Remember the "Rape of Nanking"? Japan made China surrender by rape and massacre during the second world war. Or the Ghettos and Gas chambers of Germans? British were angels infront these evils. By saying this in no way I support the British rule or other crimes they committed. But when put in comparison to what happened at the same time in history around the globe, we see the better side of the British rule.

The worldwide media attention received by Gandhi, and his movement was the biggest factor in its success. For example, NYT covered the Dandi March from start to end. Journalists came from worldover to meet Gandhi in his ashram. During the same time elsewhere in the world, Jews were trying to find cover whereever they can to avoid being killed. There was no movement of any sort against the Nazi Germany either inside or outside till the World war. Japanese ruled part of China and Korea with impunity. During the early part of the war Japanese had a policy of taking no POWs. They beheaded the enemy soldiers. Our freedom struggle sounds all but one of the biggest miracles in the history. It was later used in South Africa. But the biggest coincidence, it was against the British and British dominated govt. A pill which the British could not swallow is this Ahimsa movement. May be, had Northern Ireland followed this instead, there would have been a different outcome to their struggle.

<!--

Naxals are collecting sort of "tax" from every business ower, milkman, shop keepers, small time business men and whoever they feel has money. Who are they to determine who needs to be taxed and not? Who are they to say he is rich? When you dont pay tax, who are you to bomb railways stations and tracks? When you rob people at the point of guns, where is the morality you boast about? And something that is coming up time and again is the issue of weapons and all their actions point to their unwillingness to drop weapons. They are no different from Mumbai mafia and all it takes is nayaks led by a Gill style leader. And Ashok chakra replaced by the Crescent.

8. Rajdhani express from Islamabad to New Delhi to enable easy commute for
Jihadis.

9. Its the Energy Security of the nation. Without an assured supply, the wheels of the nation can come to grinding halt incase of a long standoff in Gulf or near the Indian shores. A nation cannot become a Superpower if it cannot sustain itself under all odds. The US has huge reserves of the precious liquid Gold in Texas and Alaska. It is being saved for the "future of the US" when the oil wells go dry everywhere. Do we have a solution for our energy situation for next 6 months? India maintains a strategic reserve for something like 120 days. So given the best chances the country will bow down in 120 days if squeezed. Let us not equate ourselves with Pakistan regarding the energy scenario. And we must stop doing such a comparison at every level with Pakistan. Its a failed state with no objective but Terrorism. World outsources jobs to India and Terrorist training to Pakistan.

The booming automobile industry can prove to be our nemesis, if we do not come up with hybrid cars that run on alternative fuels. Indian Universities and Research Institutes need to focus in this aspect which determines the nation's future. And moreover hybrid cars will save the already degraded environment from reaching an irreversible state. And as sincere citizens we need to start avoiding use of cooking fuels for boiling water to start with. If we just consider the amount of energy spent to boil water at homes and restaurants when we have enough sun shine all round the year, it will be clear how much of energy is being wasted. Solar powered gadgets must be preferred wherever possible and this must be strongly encouraged by the government. With the purchasing power of the masses at an all time high and a strong real estate market, any such energy policy amendment will take us a long way into the future and push the crisis backwards by decades.

The Government is making the best use of its influence in the former Soviet republics to secure a assured energy supply. India's active bidding for Oil blocks in those areas is being welcomed by the respective govts. This area is the next energy rich region outside the Arabian Gulf. India enjoys a big brother status with some countries in this region, as many of them face the same Islamic terrorism emanating out of Pakistan.

And the crowning achievement of the govts policies is the establishment of India's first overseas Air Base in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The primary objective, protect Tajik republic from any threat. And this base will serve India to secure its oil supply routes and more importantly launch deep strikes beyond the Indian territory. Dushanbe being close the Chinese, Russian, Pakistani and Afghan borders, serves multiple purposes.

So what India needs is a strong internal energy policy that will tackle the problem inside out.

<!--

And such organizations must be punished ruthlessly." By taking arms, the cause is lost fundementally in a Democratic society. No cause can ever be achieved by armed struggle. We can look around our subcontinent for proof. And if you take China, the armed revolution has resulted in no basic human rights. Democratic, unarmed protestors were bulldozed in the heart of Beijing. Choosing to protest with violent means equates to threatening the Govt. A Govt should not let itself be threatened in any way. Threatening an elected govt mounts to mocking the Democarcy and the beliefs of the majority. The business of negotiating with such terror outfits should be summarily stopped. Talk to the govt but you cannot threaten the govt. Sitting at the negotiating table with an AK47 slung across the shoulder means, "do what I/We want or face my bullet". Take the classic example of AP. Negotiations are on with Naxals and the truce offered by the new govt is being freely used to rearm, recruit and regroup by the naxals. Our politicians will not learn lessons from the sacrifices being made by the police. The naxals tried to kill the former CM, who waged a war on naxals. The new CM decided to stop the war and talk to them. So the naxals have won what they needed. They brought the state to the negotiating table. Doesn't this mean an elected govt is feeling threatened by an armed group? The state has all the resources with them to crush this militancy. How many more such govt will buckle under the pressure of a gun? Put in the otherway, how many more times, we the people are going to elect such cowards. On the other side, the causes for such problems should be identified and corrected. I dont give a clean chit to the govt either. The dismal failures of successive govts in carrying out developmental works in the affected areas aggravated the situation. But armed struggle is no solution to any cause. Being the country where the Ahimsa was perfected just 50 years back, resorting armed struggle for a cause is very disturbing. An armed struggle can easily lose its track. Afghanistan, jihadis fought Soviets, then they fought among themselves. Now they fight the US. Tomorrow, who knows??? But what is sure is they will fight someone. A generation of warlords produces yet another one. A warlike situation kills every avenue to express your opinion and objective thinking. And hence such struggles never achieve their objective. With growing communication links, the armed groups form networks worldwide. Naxals in AP are in a joint venture with Nepali Maoists. Maoists fight Nepali govt backed by India. So the naxals are now conspiring against the Indian govt. Should we not term them as Anti-Nationals? Do we invite them for talks? Politicians, we know your are politicians because your are not good at anything else. What should we call the ones who elect them? ********, ******, **** !!!!

<!--

Least bothered how he died? Killed in encounter or committed suicide. The news channels discuss this like Gandhi's assasination. By Gandhi, I referred to the one related to Partition and not Bofors. His wife wants to know if he died in an encounter ? Or wasit staged? And a news channel telecasted this interview. Staged or not,he deserved to die a cruel death. There are some sympathisers whoshould have been killed tooo. Might be JJ has other plans.

He is no "common human". And some reports say it was suicide. They paint a picture of supreme sacrifice on the bandit's part. But if someone next door commits suicide, it is termed as "out of depression". Veerappan, I feel was shit scared about his future and was depressed. In the end killed himself. An act of cowardice. How about this? Human rights activists want an enquiry on this episode. BS. A forest official was beheaded by the bandit and his head was left
on a rock for years. Where were these Human Right activists all this time? Did they raise their voice when he killed innocents and police officials? These activists are basically spineless people who just poke at the police, never dare to say a word about the devil.

And the most depressing part of this is that there are sympathisers who publicly support him. They tried to get a deal with the previous TN govt on Public Amnesty for the Bandit. Had that happened, I would have preferred to have the Police and Judiciary system completely shutdown. If a criminal like Veerappan can be pardoned, then no one is a criminal and should ever be arrested. If we just consider the fact the he killed 2000 elephants atleast, apart from other small animals, he is no human being. For just this, he should be publicly beaten to
death. Rather than considering this option, some bas***** proposed an Public Amnesty. Offlate he tied up with Tamil extremists groups and Naxals. Armed himself with AK 47s. Things were taking a turn from worse to worst. He could have easily recruited tribes from the regions surrounding the forests for yet another extremists force. Something which our country cannot afford to at this point of time, for that matter never. So pardoning someone like him can be termed as Ass**** idea.

Should there be an equiry on why he was killed and not arrested???? Let me tell you, if police files a case agaisnt me for peeing on the street side, I can pull that case for a decade. Fodder scam is running for years. And so is the investigation into the scam. The supporters of the bandit in the govt and police force would have jeopardised every attempt in that direction. These informers helped the bandit and had so many people brutally killed by that criminal. We can only dream of having him arrested and brought to justice. His death has saved some young lives in the STF team. This is the joy we should derieve from his death. If one elephant, one deer, one rabbit and one more STF constable is alive because of his death, he deserves it. And ofcourse, the way he died too.

<!--
